Police are asking for help from the public to identify two people involved in the brutal beating of a man in an alley in Venice, California.
The incident unfolded on Sept. 28 at about 2 a.m., but police released the security video on Thursday after being unable to make progress in their investigation.
The video shows two men on bicycles in an argument with a third man near the intersection of Speedway and Market Street.
One of the men punched the victim several times and knocked him down. He was kicked in the face, and when the victim tried to stand up, he was beaten on the head with bolt cutters.
The victim, identified only as Kyle, spoke to KTLA-TV and said that he had no memory of the beating at all. His girlfriend Rose said they celebrated their anniversary that day, and then the next day, she was called to a hospital where he was being treated.
Doctors had to drain fluid from his skull to relieve the pressure from swelling. His surgeon told Kyle that he could easily have died from his injury or suffered severe brain damage.
His girlfriend said she didn’t even recognize him when she saw him at the hospital.
“Mentally, it has been a little rough, especially the first few weeks coming off it,” said Kyle. “I’m healing from it all and just grateful to be here.”
He also said that he was grateful to the woman who found him after the beating and called 911.
“I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. I don’t know if I’d be here without you, so thank you,” Kyle said.
Police said the main assailant was a black male.
