NewsBusters Podcast: Sunday at CBS Stinks, Starting with ’60 Minutes’

News & Politics

CBS is so shamelessly partisan than it can pair a Scott Pelley puffball interview with Joe Biden and a vicious attack piece on Ron DeSantis in the same 60 Minutes show. No one there looks at the pair and says “this looks awfully partisan.” Add in leftist tilt at Face the Nation and Sunday Morning, and the whole day stinks for conservatives.

Pelley only asked about the Israel-Hamas war, except to suggest the “hard-right” Republicans were endangering America by failing to approve a new Speaker of the House.

By contrast, Sharyn Alfonsi went looking for hard-left Democrats who think Govs. Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott should be in prison for “human trafficking” — sending illegal immigrants to blue states.

Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan repeatedly attack-questioned DeSantis about his talk of shooting at the southern border. “Would a soldier have to ask his commanding officer for permission before he shoots anyone wearing a backpack? Or is this just a blanket shoot-anyone-with-a-backpack [policy]?” DeSantis explained “They’re eating our lunch at the border right now because we don’t do anything to fight back.”

On Sunday Morning, just last week they promoted a new book on fascism by Rachel Maddow, and this week the book plug was for New York Times columnist David Brooks and his ponderous new book How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen. Brooks identified two types of people: Diminishers make you feel invisible, stereotype you, label you. Illuminators are curious about you and “make you feel lit up.”

What makes this a weird flex is that Brooks is very good as stereotyping and labeling and diminishing conservatives. Sarah Palin was a “fatal cancer,” and Ted Cruz spoke in “dark and satanic tones.” CBS’s John Dickerson admired how he decried “the disease of narcissistic hucksterism” in the Republican debates. That kind of talk gets you rewarded with pundit gigs at The New York Times and the PBS NewsHour.
