Senator Cory Booker promised Wednesday to pick a woman as his running mate should he win the Democratic presidential nomination.
Booker was asked at the She the People 2020 presidential forum in Houston if he would pledge to give the second slot on the presidential ticket to a female candidate should he have the opportunity.
“I will have a woman running mate,” the New Jersey Democrat responded immediately. “To me it’s really clear that we do that.”
At a campaign event in New Hampshire last month, Booker said he was sure a woman would appear on the Democratic ticket in 2020 and that he was “very confident” Democrats would “make history” with the party’s candidates this campaign season.
“No matter what, I’m looking you in the eye and saying this: There will be a woman on the ticket. I don’t know if it’s in the vice president’s position or in the president’s position,” Booker told supporters. “If I have my way, there will be a woman on the ticket.”
The She the People forum, which focused on issues related to women of color, boasted appearances by eight Democrats vying for the party’s presidential nomination. Besides Booker, Senators Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren attended, as did Representative Tulsi Gabbard, former representative Beto O’Rourke, and former secretary of housing and urban development Julian Castro.
